Scallier certifies retail parks in Romania under BREEAM system
Scallier, a Polish company developing the Funshop Park chain of retail parks in Romania, has decided to have all newly constructed facilities certified under the BREEAM system, one of the world’s most recognized methods of assessing sustainable construction.
Gleeds, a global leader in the field of construction consulting, is responsible for implementing the certification process and for project management and cost management services.
6 retail parks by the end of 2022
By the end of 2022, Scallier plans to deliver 6 retail parks in Romania with a total leasable area of 40,000 sqm GLA. The facilities will be located in medium-sized and smaller cities where access to modern retail space is severely limited or even non-existent.
“Funshop Parks will fill this gap by providing residents with convenient, functional and tailored facilities with an attractive retail and dining offer.”
– Wojciech Jurga, Partner at Scallier, responsible for the company’s development in Romania
Sustainability and real benefits
The BREEAM certification underscores Scallier’s commitment to the principles of sustainable development. The goal is to create facilities that:
-
bring tangible benefits to tenants (lower operating costs, better lease terms),
-
meet the needs of local communities (including playgrounds, comfort, accessibility),
-
respect the environment (efficient use of resources, green design solutions).
“Choosing BREEAM is not only a matter of prestige, but also a concrete benefit for users – regardless of age. With the right design solutions, we can shape a friendly environment around our investments.”
– Justyna Chmielewska, Head of Sustainability, Gleeds Polska
A market with potential – Romania beyond Bucharest
The Romanian market is characterized by strong polarization, with as much as 31% of the 3.96 million sq m of modern retail space located in Bucharest. Meanwhile, access to such facilities is still limited in smaller cities.
“In Romania, only 8 retail and service facilities are BREEAM certified. Scallier will significantly influence the development of this trend, increasing the share of ‘green’ investments outside the capital.”
– Wojciech Jurga
According to the Green Build 2020 report, more than 75 percent of Romania’s certified buildings are currently located in Bucharest – showing how much potential there is in the rest of the country’s regions.
Ambitious plans and advanced talks with tenants
Scallier is already in talks with tenants, including Polish retail chains looking to expand in the rapidly growing Romanian market.
